When Weaver and Tidwell’s property tax group began serving Western Extrusions as a client in 1998, they realized immediately the Carrollton manufacturing firm was paying considerably more in property taxes than it should.
It was painfully clear their building was in a flood plain and they would have to prove that fact to Dallas County.” In turn, Weaver and Tidwell worked closely with key managers on an evaluation strategy that was the basis of every decision, with the goal of proving Western’s flood-plain location should qualify for a property tax reduction.
Weaver and Tidwell ’s internal research yielded an unlikely source of information that helped seal the deal: An old Polaroid photo, taken from the roof of Western’s 550,000-square-foot facility by an employee. It harkened back to the stormy day the Dallas County Sheriff’s office told Western’s workers to evacuate the building within 10 minutes to escape approaching flood waters.
Employees joked that instead of being in a 100-year flood plain, it appeared they were in a ‘10-minute’ flood plain. So, along with the photo and some engineering data, Weaver and Tidwell had the evidence they needed to present to the County. The case was proven, thanks to Weaver and Tidwell's knowledge, experience, and advocacy skills, and Western Extrusions’ property tax obligation was reduced substantially, saving the company a substantial amount of money.
Says John Mahalik of Western Extrusions: “Weaver and Tidwell is utmost professional, and we know with their experience over the years, any advice they give us is the right course of action and will benefit our company. As far as we’re concerned, they are the industry leader, and do a fantastic job for us. Not only are they someone we can go to with confidence, they have become a trusted friend as well.”
